¶ Edward Daniel Clarke (1769–1822), antiquary and mineralogist. He counted amongst his correspondents the Greek scholar Richard Porson, Lord Byron, and Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, and in the scientific field, W. H. Wollaston, Smithson Tennant, and Humphry Davy. A prolific author, he published—beside his own travels—various other books and pamphlets, and some twenty-eight papers in learned journals, dealing with a wide range of antiquities and the topic of mineralogy.

¶ From the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Volume IX. According to DNB this paper by Thomas Lauder Dick (1784-1848) was the first that drew the world’s attention to the extraordinary parallel roads of Glen Roy. In this paper, he conclusively proves that they were a natural feature, ‘the result probably of the action of a lake.’ The splendid engravings and map were engraved on copper by William Miller after the authors own drawings.
